Learn How Jewelry Boxes Protect and Organize your Jewelry

By

Jewelry boxes do their job perfectly. A jewelry box is intended to keep your jewelry safe from damage and protect it from the elements. For a jewelry box to be effective, it needs to meet the needs of your jewelry collection. Jewelry boxes shouldn't be piled up with heaps of jewelry so by making a mental note of what you will need now and in the future, you will ensure safe harbor for your collection. If you have gemstones that need special attention such as opals and pearls you will also want to take this into consideration when choosing your jewelry box.

Many different materials are often used when crafting jewelry boxes. The most common materials for boxes are leather, wood, or both together. Most women love wooden jewelry boxes but it is more common for a man to pick a jewelry box made of leather.

Why Women Prefer Wood Jewelry Boxes

One reason that women prefer jewelry boxes made of wood is because they are more durable therefore capable of holding and protecting fragile jewelry better. If you have a real passion for jewelry and your collection is large, you may want to invest in an armoire for it. There are also fabric covered boxes for people who want to add their own style to them. These are great for a girls jewelry box as they can be decorating with beads and such.

If you are worried that a burglar might possibly come and steal your jewelry, you can relax. Burglaries are rare but you do have something far more common to worry about. If your jewelry becomes exposed to the elements, it could become permanently ruined. Your biggest fear should really be moisture. If your jewelry becomes permanently stained due to moisture badly tarnishing it, it looses a tremendous amount of value. This can be especially bad if this is a piece you intended to pass on as an heirloom.

Jewelry Box Additions that Protect Your Jewelry

The wood finishes, stains and linings that are added when jewelry boxes are made are put there not only to keep your jewelry from being chipped and damaged, it is also there to keep moisture from contacting your jewelry and causing it to become permanently tarnished.

One of the worst things you can do is forget to properly latch your jewelry box. This can result in your necklaces chains and bracelets ending up in a tangled mess. That can often result in broken jewelry when you try to untangle it. By keeping the lid tightly latched, your jewelry will stand a better chance of staying put inside the dividers.

I find that the more little compartments a jewelry box has the easier it is to keep everything organized. When it's one big box with no dividers, everything get's mixed up and tangled.
